The Department of General Internal Medicine at PGH is a comprehensive care unit addressing a wide spectrum of adult medical conditions
from routine concerns such as viral flu and headaches to complex multisystem disorders. The department is particularly attentive to elderly patients with multiple co-morbidities and also provides palliative and end-of-life care where needed. Four senior consultants provide regular outpatient services, ensuring accessible and quality care.
General Internal Medicine
The Department of General Internal Medicine at PGH is a comprehensive care unit addressing a wide spectrum of adult medical conditions — from routine concerns such as viral flu and headaches to complex multisystem disorders. The department is particularly attentive to elderly patients with multiple co-morbidities and also provides palliative and end-of-life care where needed. Four senior consultants provide regular outpatient services, ensuring accessible and quality care. Inpatients are monitored and managed 24/7 by Registrars and Medical Officers under consultant supervision. Emergency and A&E support is also provided as required.
To provide patient-centered, evidence-based care for a broad range of general medical problems, using international standards and compassionate communication to address each individual’s health concerns effectively.
Services Offered by the Department
The department functions across both inpatient and outpatient settings, offering expert diagnostic evaluations and treatments for a variety of general medical issues. Consultants and their teams manage critical and chronic conditions with a multidisciplinary approach, supported by procedural interventions when needed. Patients benefit from the department’s strong emphasis on evidence-based care, accessibility, and responsiveness.
- Management of acute medical emergencies (e.g., stroke, status epilepticus, febrile illnesses) in A&E
- In-Patient care for complex medical conditions such as FUO, meningitis, sepsis, respiratory infections
- Routine Out-Patient consultation for general medical issues
- Interdepartmental consultations for admitted patients under other specialties
- Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (Upper/Lower GI endoscopies, lumbar puncture, paracentesis, pleural tap)
- Palliative and end-of-life care in selected cases

- Initiated monthly CPC (Clinicopathological Conference) sessions at PGH, with the department leading the inaugural session on Infection Prevention and Control
