Biography
Prof. Dr. Akhtar Ali completed his pre-medical from Edwards College Peshawar and joined Khyber Medical College in 1975. Dr. Akhtar had brilliant academic records at KMC, he topped two university exams and secured second position in MBBS final year. Dr. Akhtar was also declared as the best medical graduate of the session 1975-1981 in Peshawar University
Professor Akhtar moved abroad on scholarship for higher studies to the United Kingdom. He started working at King’s College Hospital London and Royal Free hospital London after moving to the United Kingdom. Dr. Akhtar completed his training from various hospitals and then did his MRCP (UK) followed by MRCP (Dublin). After further training he got CSST both in nephrology and internal medicine.
After seven years in the United Kingdom, Dr. Akhtar moved back to Pakistan and laid down the foundation stone of nephrology in KP. He was the first nephrologist in KP, Dr. Akhtar struggled a lot to establish nephrology as a specialty in KP.
He developed and established nephrology at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) and got it recognized for FCPS training in nephrology. His students are working as consultants and professors of nephrology in various hospitals across the globe.
Prof. Dr. Akhtar was the pioneer in establishing the faculty of nephrology of CPSP in LRH. He has served as examiner in FCPS Nephrology and M.D Nephrology. Prof. Ali has also served as the President of Pakistan Society of Nephrology and Urology. Subsequently he became the President of Pakistan society of Nephrology.
He also held the prestigious post of DEAN PGMI for two years and subsequently remained as Director of Medical and Allied faculty of Medicine of MTI Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar. Prof. Akhtar has more than forty publications and many of them have been published in International Journals. He is an excellent clinician and is popular among his colleagues and patients.
