Biography

Professor Dr. Akhtar Ali, a Peshawar native, boasts an impressive academic pedigree. After excelling in pre-med at Edwards College, he joined Khyber Medical College in 1975, graduating top of his class on multiple occasions and earning the distinction of “best medical graduate” (1975-1981) at Peshawar University. This accomplishment was further recognized with a Gold Medal and Merit Certificate.

Dr. Ali then leveraged a scholarship to pursue higher studies in the UK. He honed his skills at prestigious institutions like King’s College Hospital and Royal Free Hospital before completing his MRCP (UK) and MRCP (Dublin) qualifications. Additionally, he obtained CSST certifications in both nephrology and internal medicine.

Following seven years abroad, Dr. Ali returned to Pakistan with a mission to establish nephrology as a specialty in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He became the province’s first nephrologist and played a pivotal role in developing and establishing a nephrology unit at Lady Reading Hospital. This unit eventually gained recognition for FCPS training in nephrology, with some of Dr. Ali’s students now flourishing as consultants and professors worldwide.

His leadership extended beyond the hospital walls. He pioneered the creation of a nephrology faculty at the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) within Lady Reading Hospital and served as an examiner for FCPS Nephrology and M.D. Nephrology programs. Notably, he held the prestigious positions of President of the Pakistan Society of Nephrology and Urology (later the Pakistan Society of Nephrology), Dean of PGMI, and Director of Medical and Allied Faculty of Medicine at MTI Lady Reading Hospital.

Dr. Ali’s dedication extends to scholarly pursuits, with over forty publications, many in international journals. He is not only a highly skilled clinician but also well-respected by colleagues and patients alike.
