Nephrology
Nephrology deals with kidney-related conditions, while hematology focuses on blood disorders. Nephrologists treat kidney diseases like CKD and kidney stones, using methods like dialysis and transplantation.
Overview
Nephrology is a medical specialty focused solely on the kidneys, those bean-shaped organs that play a critical role in maintaining a healthy balance of electrolytes in the body, regulating blood pressure, and filtering waste products from the blood. Nephrologists, as guardians of kidney health, diagnose and treat a wide spectrum of kidney-related conditions. These conditions can range from acute kidney injury, a sudden decline in kidney function requiring immediate medical attention, to chronic kidney disease, a gradual and progressive loss of kidney function over time. Nephrologists also address kidney stones, hard mineral deposits that form in the kidneys and can cause severe pain, and urinary tract infections, infections affecting any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys.
Depending on the specific kidney condition, nephrologists utilize various treatment approaches. These may include medication management to control symptoms, manage blood pressure, and slow disease progression. In more severe cases, dialysis, a process that artificially removes waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys are no longer functioning adequately, may be necessary. Kidney transplantation, replacing a diseased kidney with a healthy one from a donor, offers another treatment option. Nephrologists also emphasize lifestyle modifications, tailoring diet, exercise routines, and medication adherence to promote kidney health and prevent further complications. By offering a comprehensive range of diagnostic tools and treatment options, nephrologists play a vital role in safeguarding kidney function and overall health.
